Step 1: Painting For my project, I started with a sanded table made mostly of pine. But I did have a few 1×16 plywood pieces from shelves painted an off white (leftover from another project), so I used them for the shelves. You can mix different wood types for this finish! You can remove hardware, or just tape it off. Make sure the project is free of any sanding residue by brushing or vacuuming with a soft bristled brush. I go the extra step and wipe down with a damp cloth as well. Most paint brands carry an “Antique White” right off the shelf, or you can have something mixed up. Just pick something with a warm muted undertone. I recommend a Semi-Gloss Paint with Primer in it because it saves a step. You must use a primer with white, as over time, it will yellow if you do not! These same results could be achieved with a brush or paint in the can, but I wanted to show you how we spray a project in this tutorial. We always start with the project turned upside down, and paint the hardest to reach areas first. Then we work our way outwards. If you were brushing, you would do the same. Paint the underside, hardest to reach place first. Then move outward. Once the underside is completely painted, allow to dry to touch before you flip over the project. After you flip the project over, begin again in the most difficult to reach place, and work your way outward. Finally, paint the top and outsides. For a vintage white, I highly recommend just one nice even coat of paint. Remember, we’ll be going over the paint with top coat! Allow the project to completely dry as recommended by the paint can.

Tip Priming is not necessary, since you want some of the paint to come off easily during the distressing process. If the furniture’s existing finish is a light color such as pine or oak, you may want to paint it another color before applying the coat of white paint and distressing the finish. Consider what color you would like to show through the off-white paint and use that as your base color before waxing and repainting the pieces white. For a variation on the look, paint the furniture with several layers of color with wax in between each layer. For instance, paint it brown; wax it, and paint it blue; wax it; then paint it white. Sand through some or all of the paint layers, varying the look over each piece, for an aged look.

Here are you thinking the table top is too dark and I was going to suggest that you do the top of the hutch dark to match — although you’d have to strip the paint off cuz you can’t stain over paint. I like the idea of one of the posters above – remove the dark area rug and see how it looks. I do think you need something in your dining room to tie-in to the darker wood pieces in your living room since the areas are open to each other. Honestly, I love your table, I think it is absolutely stunning and beautiful with the dark top contrasted with the white base and the white chairs. But of course it’s your home and you have to surround yourself with decor that makes you happiest, not what’s on trend or what anyone else likes! I actually have been thinking about painting the base of my round table a creamy white color, maybe doing the chairs too and lightening up on the upholstery. Your redo is a good inspiration.

Dipped furniture is a popular home design trend that works well with kitchen tables and chairs. To try it, paint the bottom half of the legs of your table. Or, try the reverse: Paint most of the table but let the wood peek out on the bottom half of the legs. The dipped look is a great way to introduce a strong color without completely committing to a shade. If you want to get really creative, consider using chalkboard paint on the top of your table. Kids will love having a canvas to scribble on while they wait to eat, and adults will also have fun scribbling messages or reminders on the table too.

When it’s time to paint, make sure to select a high-quality water-based enamel paint, which will give you a hard finish that’s similar to an oil paint. Kitchen tables take a beating, and you’ll need a paint that can withstand plates, cups and all sorts of other objects banging it every single day. Paint on a few coats and make sure to let each one dry fully. Once you’ve finished painting, apply a coat of a water-based polyurethane or furniture wax to protect your table and then enjoy your updated piece of furniture.
